How the Japanese Body Balance Method Works

Odori Body Balance (OBB) is a personalized movement practice based on the Japanese body balance method. in Rotterdam, serving Rotterdam, The Hague / Den Haag, and South Holland.

An OBB session does not start by trying to “fix” your body or push you into a new shape. Instead, it begins by understanding how you naturally move today.

We slow things down, pay attention to how your body organizes itself, and build awareness step by step. From there, we explore new options for movement that feel more balanced, coordinated, and sustainable for you.

Start by observing how you move with Japanese body balance method

In the first part of a session, the practitioner observes how you move in simple, everyday ways. This may include how you stand, sit, walk, reach, or shift your weight.

Rather than judging or correcting, we look at:
- how you hold yourself in stillness and in motion
- how your balance and stability feel
- how smoothly your movements begin and end
- how different parts of your body participate in each action
- which patterns you repeat without noticing

The focus is on awareness, not on diagnosis. We do not identify medical conditions or give medical advice. We simply create a clear picture of how your body currently moves.

Explore movement, don’t force it

OBB does not force your body into extreme positions or chase a specific level of flexibility. There is no pressure to “perform” or to reach a certain standard.
Instead, the practitioner guides you through simple, controlled movements and small variations. You might explore:
- shifting weight in different directions
- changing the speed or size of a movement
- noticing how one part of the body responds when another part moves
The aim is to help you notice:
- unnecessary tension
- compensation patterns
- restrictions or hesitations in movement
- differences between sides of the body
As you explore, you begin to discover movements that feel more comfortable, efficient, and connected, without forcing or pushing.

Individualized practice

There is no fixed routine in OBB. Every session is adapted to you.

The practitioner considers:

- your current movement patterns
- your level of body awareness
- your history with movement or exercise
- what you would like to improve or understand better

Two people may receive completely different sessions, even if they use similar words to describe their goals. This is because every body moves differently, and every person notices different things.

Over time, your sessions continue to evolve with you. As your awareness grows, the practice adjusts to meet you where you are.

What we pay attention to

During an OBB session, we pay attention to how your whole body participates in movement, not just one area. Key themes include:

- Body awareness – what you can feel and notice as you move
- Alignment – how your body organizes itself in different positions
- Balance – how you manage weight and stability
- Coordination – how different parts of the body work together
- Movement patterns – the habits you repeat without thinking
- Mobility – how easily you can move through comfortable ranges
- Symmetry and differences – how the left and right sides behave
- Unnecessary tension and compensation – where you do more work than needed

These are not medical assessments or diagnostic procedures. They are practical ways of understanding how you move, so we can explore more supportive options together.

What you may notice

As you continue with OBB, you may start to notice changes in how you move and how you feel in everyday life. For some people, this can include:

- less unnecessary tension in common movements
- easier, more comfortable movement in daily tasks
- improved balance and coordination
- a clearer sense of connection between different parts of the body
- more confidence in how they move through space
- a better understanding of their own movement habits

These changes are individual and often begin as subtle shifts in awareness. OBB does not promise specific results or outcomes. Instead, it offers a structured way to explore your movement and support gradual, sustainable change.

You don’t need to be flexible or athletic

OBB is not only for flexible, athletic, or experienced people. You do not need a background in sports, dance, or fitness to benefit from this practice.

Sessions are designed to meet you where you are, whether you are very active, mostly sedentary, or somewhere in between. Movements are chosen to be accessible and adjustable.

The goal is not to push harder or to prove anything. The goal is to understand your body better and to develop movement that feels more natural, balanced, and sustainable over time.

What OBB is not

To keep expectations clear, it is helpful to say what OBB is not. OBB is not about:

  • pushing your body to its limits
  • forcing flexibility or extreme positions
  • following a fixed, one-size-fits-all exercise routine
  • competing with others or comparing your progress
  • diagnosing or treating medical conditions

  • OBB is not a replacement for medical care.

Book a Trial Session

The best way to understand OBB is to experience it. A trial session gives you time to:

- explore how your body currently moves
- notice patterns you may not have seen before
- experience how small changes in movement can feel different

You do not need to prepare or “be ready.” Just come as you are, with curiosity about how you move.
